A Three-Day Journey into Clay

I wanted to share a little more about one of my favourite offerings here at Brick Kiln Pottery — our 3 Day Intensive Pottery Course. It’s one of those experiences that really lets you slow down, focus, and get lost in the rhythm of clay. Our last one was held in October 2025, l’d love to share with you how it went!

When people arrive on the first morning, there’s often a mix of excitement and nerves. Some have never touched clay before; others have dabbled but want to build their confidence. There’s a quiet hum as everyone settles in, mugs of tea in hand, taking in the wheels, the light, and the smell of clay.

By lunchtime, the nerves are gone. There’s laughter across the studio, chatter about glaze colours, and a satisfying clatter of tools being put to good use. By the end of that first day, people are tired in the best way — proud, grounded, and covered in clay from fingertips to elbows.

That’s what these three days are about for me. Time. Space. The chance to step out of your usual routine and create something from nothing.

A couple of our students getting to grips with centring the clay.

We start by getting to know the clay — learning to centre it on the wheel, finding that sweet spot where everything seems to flow. There’s something almost meditative about it. Others prefer hand-building, enjoying the slower, more intuitive feel of shaping and joining by hand. It’s never about perfection; it’s about process and play.

By the second day, I can see confidence start to grow. Movements become more assured, and conversations flow as easily as the slip on the wheel. There’s a lovely sense of focus in the air — that quiet concentration that only comes when people are completely absorbed in what they’re doing.

The third day always feels special. Everyone glazes their favourite pieces, lines them up on the shelves, and there’s this gentle pride in the air — the realisation that just three days ago, none of those pots existed. We finish with tea, a few laughs, and usually a promise to come back soon.

Three days might not sound like much, but it’s enough to remind yourself what it feels like to be creative. To make something that’s yours, from your own two hands.

A Little About Us

Brick Kiln Pottery started in 2023, when I outgrew my small home studio and realised there were so many people in Norfolk looking for somewhere to create. I wanted to build a space that was open, welcoming, and calm — a place where people could come to learn and unwind, without any pressure or judgement.

Now, our light-filled studio has become a small community of makers and learners. Some come weekly, others just for workshops like this, but everyone adds something special to the space. It’s a place for connection — with clay, with creativity, and with each other.

If you’d like to experience three peaceful, creative days at the wheel, I’d love to welcome you to Brick Kiln Pottery.

If you’re interested but have a few questions first, please do reach out to us — we’ll be happy to help with anything you’d like to know.
